WHAT IS A COLUMBARY?

A columbary serves as a dignified resting place for cremated remains, commonly known as cremains. This is the residual substance resulting from the cremation process, housed within an urn. Each columbary unit has the capacity to accommodate two urns.

The Catholic Church, having allowed cremation since the 1980s, mandates that urns cannot be retained within households. Instead, they must be interred in a columbary, providing a final and sacred resting place for the departed.

The growing popularity of cremation can be attributed to the scarcity of urban space for traditional cemeteries, making burial lots prohibitively expensive. Columbaries emerge as a more cost-effective alternative, with the current starting price at 135,000 pesos for a space designed for two urns. It’s important to note that prices may increase over time, making early investment a prudent choice.

This global shift towards cremation reflects the practical consideration of space constraints and contributes to the rising preference for columbaries as a meaningful and economical solution for preserving the memory of loved ones.

Embraced by the church and experiencing a growing trend, cremation has become a popular choice for various compelling reasons. Its economic feasibility, convenience, and hygienic aspects set it apart from traditional burial practices. Additionally, some individuals opt for cremation when considering the relocation of their loved ones’ remains. This involves the cremation of bones, with the ashes placed in an urn for subsequent transfer to a columbary, providing a modern and flexible alternative to traditional burial methods.
